Shin pain in children, particularly active children involved in running-based sports, shares a similar biomechanical pattern to shin splints in adults, though it’s worth assessing separately given a child’s growth plates are still developing.

What Causes Shin Splints in Children?

As with adults, excessive pronation is generally the underlying driver; it increases traction on the tendons around the shin, leading to tightness and pain. In growing children, this traction can interact with growth-plate development, which is why we assess children’s shin pain separately from adult presentations.
