Shin splints are pain along the shinbone, usually brought on by running, walking, or repetitive impact activities. They are one of the most commonly searched foot and leg conditions, and we see them regularly among active adults.
What Causes Shin Splints?
Shin splints are generally linked to repetitive stress on the shin bone and surrounding muscles, often aggravated by excess pronation – where the foot rolls inward more than it should, increasing internal rotation through the lower leg. Contributing factors can include a sudden increase in running distance or intensity, unsupportive footwear, running on hard surfaces, and tight calf muscles.
Symptoms
- Aching or sharp pain along the inner shin
- Pain that builds during or after running or walking
- Tenderness along the shin bone
Our Approach
A biomechanical assessment helps identify what’s contributing to shin pain, including gait pattern, footwear, and training load, so a treatment plan can be tailored accordingly rather than simply recommending rest alone.
Treatment Options We Offer
- Custom orthotics: designed to help manage excess pronation
- Stretching and strengthening for the calf and lower leg
- Footwear guidance suited to your gait and activity
- Foot mobilisation and strapping during flare-ups
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep running with shin splints?
This depends on severity. Continuing to train through significant pain can worsen the underlying issue, so an assessment can help clarify what level of activity is appropriate.
